Memphis-based guitarist, songwriter and producer, born 1936 in La Grange, Georgia. As a session-guitarist he was first associates with the L.A. [l=Gold Star Studios]. Later, in Memphis, he began producing for Satellite Records [l=Satellite (2)] which became [l=Stax Records], producing the labels first hit single, [a=Carla Thomas]'s 1960 [r=2235230]. Moman left Stax in 1964 after a dispute over money and started his own studio, [l=American Sound Studio], also in Memphis with fellow session men [a=Reggie Young], [a=Bobby Womack], [a=Tommy Cogbill], [a=Bobby Emmons] and Gene Chrisman. The studio and the session team became essential in the 60's Memphis soul in recordings with such artists as [a=Wilson Pickett] and [a=Joe Tex]. Moman turned to writing and producing, producing such knows albums as [a=Elvis Presley]'s [r=1523667], and writing or co-writing such classics as "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" and "The Dark End of the Street, "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song", often co-writing with [a=Dan Penn]. During the late 1960s and early 1970s Moman's studio had more than 120 charting singles by pop, soul, and country artists. At times during this period, more than 20 of Billboard's Hot 100 songs were produced at American Sound.
