b : August 14, 1909 in Portsmouth (USA) d : September 25, 1967 in Munich (Germany) Jazz violonist. He starts his career in Alphonso Trent orchestra in Dallas in 1926. In 1928, he's playing in New York with [a=Jelly Roll Morton]. He forms his own band in 1930 with [a=Cozy Cole] and [a=Jonah Jones] in Buffalo. In 1935 until 1940, he and his sextet take up residency at the Onyx Club, a small club on 52nd street (New York) and gain big success. After the War, he opens a restaurant in Chicago. In 1957, he's recording with [a=Dizzy Gillespie] then come in Europe for a tour, shortly cancelled due to ill reasons. In 1963, he plays with [a=Herb Ellis]. He comes back in Europe in 1965, where he records several albums, and stays there until his death. He is buried in Copenhagen. He's probably the only violin player to play rough and "black", searching the soul more than the beautiful sound, like Armstrong did with his trumpet.
